New Arnold burger joint is first of five branches planned for Nottinghamshire

At Arnold's new gourmet burger joint "everything except the buns" is handmade on site and that includes their range of mayonnaise and secret recipe sauces.

The takeaway in Nottingham Road is the first of five planned Ohannes restaurants to open across Nottinghamshire before the end of 2020.

The next is due to take over the premises of an empty city centre unit in the spring but the location is being kept hush-hush for now.

"We sign next week so I don't want to say where exactly but it is not too far from Taco Bell," says owner Mehmet Yazicioglu.

Originally from Turkey, the businessman, who is the sole owner of the takeaway chain, has already opened 15 gourmet burger joints in his home country and will soon be opening a branch in Germany.

"It's not an empire, it's just a few restaurant," laughs the burger aficionado, who is also scouting a location in Beeston. He has yet to decide on the Notts destinations for the other two planned eateries.

Mehmet, who is currently dividing his time between Nottingham, Turkey and Germany, decided to launch his brand in Arnold in the UK as a way of garnering authentic feedback.

"There are tourists, visitors and students in the city centre. I wanted to test the concept on people who lived and work in the area, to find out what British customers want," he says.

So far so good - customers have been queuing out of the door to try the new foodie fare when the takeaway opened.

"Some people were waiting an hour but they didn't seem to mind. We were super busy," he says.

On the menu diners will find vegan, beef and chicken options - with pulled pork being added soon.

Highlights include the Mexi Burger (British beef patties, salsa with red kidney beans, jalapeno and fried onions, £5.90), the Indie Burger (curry marinated grilled chicken, curry sauce, friend onions and homemade aioli, £5.50), the Swiss Burger (British beef patties, barbecue sauce, homemade mushroom mayo, grilled mushrooms and caramalised onions, £5.90) the Big Lebowski Burger (British beef patties, salsa, cheese slices, homemade ailoi and fried onions, £6.50) and the Veggie Burger (vegan bun, veggie patties with pea protein and beetroot, salsa and caramalised onions, £6.50).

Sides start from £2.50 with homemade onion rings, chips, buttermilk chicken bits and mozzarella sticks all on offer.

Burgers come with peri peri fries and a pot of dipping sauce, packed away in a robust cardboard box.

Once settled in, the takeaway will start offering a delivery service but they won't be found on any third party apps.

Mehmet says: "As it gets colder we will be offering delivery. If people want they can call us up or send us a Facebook message but we don’t want third party dealing with it. We want to talk to our customers."
