New approach as Bertha Park High School in Perth opens

Thousands of children will be returning to school next week after a long summer holiday - but for one school, it will be extra special.

Bertha Park High School is getting ready to welcome in its very first pupils.

The school on the outskirts of Perth is the first new secondary school to be built in Scotland in 20 years.

It will be led by head teacher Stuart Clyde and a team of teachers, who Mr Clyde says are the best in the country.

The media were invited in to have a look around the new school yesterday (Thursday, August 15).

First year and second year pupils will start at the new school on Wednesday, August 21, and will spend the first few days exploring their new building and finding their way about.

There will be a whole new approach to learning at Bertha Park High School, with a focus on digital technology and longer lessons.

All the children will be given an individual iPad to use during their school years, which can be used to complete tasks in the classroom, and can then be taken home to finish off work and hand in homework.

The school has also teamed up with Microsoft, one of only 17 schools across the world, to further embrace digital technology.

Pupils will also only have four periods each day, as Mr Clyde says this will allow teachers to go more in depth during the lessons than in other schools.
