New app shows the exact quietest time to visit your local supermarket

A new app designed by a man put on furlough thanks to the coronavirus pandemic will tell you the exact quietest time at your local supermarket - so you know when it is best to shop.

It also reveals levels of stock - so you know whether they are likely to have what you want to buy.

Supermarket Check-In was built by web developer Paul Hulatt after he was placed on furlough in March.

It ranks supermarkets by length of queue and stock availability, reports The Mirror, using data supplied by users.

People who visit a supermarket can report to the app how long they had to wait and what they were able to buy - providing real-time data not available anywhere else.

Hulatt from Rainham in Kent said: "Given all the issues there have been with supermarket queues and stock availability, I wanted to help."

He added: "None of this information is publicly available elsewhere so I came up with the idea of creating a way for people to easily 'check-in' to their local supermarket after doing a shop so that others in their local community could benefit.

"This kind of socially-generated content is a really great way of communities coming together and helping each other get through this crisis."

The app will show you local supermarkets within three miles - and you can select a radius up to 25 miles.

It will rank the best to go to for queue, distance and availability - and will show you how up to date the information is.

The Supermarket Check-In app is available on Apple's App Store or Google Play for android.
