New apartments planned for Whitley Bay street once named one of the world's 'coolest'

An empty Whitley Bay shop could be given a new lease of life after plans to transform it were lodged.

If the proposals are successful, an empty unit on Park View will be divided into two with the floors above being converted into five apartments.

The unit, which has been empty for two years, was formerly a Tesco Express store, with the first floor being used as "staff facilities" and an office space, according to documents filed with North Tyneside Council.

Meanwhile, the top floor is currently sealed up, according to the design and access statement.

It said: "The attic floor has not been used for a number of years and was sealed off from the first floor of the property."

Ward councillor John O'Shea has come out in support of the scheme saying it will bring the property back into use.

He said: "It is an unused shop which has been empty for two years. I very much support the proposals, to make the shop frontage a lot better.

"To have five apartments above the shops will bring a liveability to Whitley Bay town centre. I hope it is very successful."

In 2018 Park View was surprisingly named in a Guardian list featuring ten of the coolest shopping districts on Earth alongside streets in Paris, Hamburg and Toronto.

The council is set to decide on the proposals by early November.
