New ANPR cameras could catch drivers whose cars are too loud

The Department for Transport has unveiled plans for cameras which can identify cars that are too loud.

The new cameras will be tested across the UK over the coming months, looking to catch drivers whose cars exceed the legal limits.

As well as exhausts being too loud, it could also snare drivers who rev their engines too high, reports Devon Live.

ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) technology will be used on the cameras, which will listen to cars and could even catch those who have their music system turned up too loud.

The move was announced for the Department for Transport and will see a number of locations targeted over the next seven months, as first reported in AutoExpress.

Transport Secretary Chris Grayling said: “I look forward to seeing how these exciting new cameras could work."

It is illegal for cars to exceed 74 decibels. The DfT said if the trial works then detectors will be rolled out across the UK.

The detectors will catch motorcycle riders as well as drivers.
