New Annual headliner postponed by Melbourne lockdown

STRANGE LOOP: Melbourne's re-emergence of COVID-19 has caused the postponement of Paul Dempsey's Newcastle show on Sunday.

MELBOURNE'S five-day lockdown to contain to their latest COVID-19 outbreak has caused the postponement of Paul Dempsey's headline performance at Newcastle's New Annual festival.

The Something For Kate frontman was scheduled to perform an intimate show at the Newcastle Art Gallery on Sunday evening to close the We Can Be Heroes rock photography exhibition.

The sold-out performance was one of the expected highlights of the inaugural New Annual festival.

The Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews announced on Friday that the stage-four lockdown would come into effect from midnight Saturday, preventing the Melbourne-based Dempsey travelling to Newcastle this weekend.

A City Of Newcastle spokeswoman said refunds were available to ticket-holders and that they planned to reschedule Dempsey's performance shortly.

No other events from the New Annual's program are impacted by the Melbourne lockdown.
