New Amazon Prime series lays bare the true horrors faced by Leeds’ children living in poverty

An emotive TV series that lays bare the true horrors faced by Leeds children living in poverty has aired on Amazon Prime.

The four-part drama, titled @ Rock Bottom, which can be viewed on the streaming service, follows the lives of three resilient children living in austerity in Leeds.

A description of the show, which is set between 2015 and 2020, states it's about “three kids, a broken family, a tough head teacher and food banks.”

Each episode of the series, which tagline is ‘Every Child Has a Right to Eat’, focuses on a different year in the character’s lives as they deal with the day to day of living in deprivation.

The first episode opens as Chelsy Bee and her cousins Asbo and Arthur struggle with the prospect that their family might be evicted from their home.

In the opening sequence of the series it states that in 2015, “austerity and falling school attendances” had left the children abandoned on work placements.

It also noted that “pay as you feel” cafes and food banks had become “normal” for many families living in Leeds.

Later on in the series, in one particularly heart-wrenching scene, Chelsy goes to a local food bank to collect food for her family.

But on her way home she’s cornered by a group of teenagers who ridicule her and call her a “scrounger” for using a food bank.

The short series, which highlights poverty in Leeds, was written and directed by Jay Lumsden, from Film Yorkshire.

His Twitter profile states he is a Leeds based film director and writer that specialises in making drama based on life and the real lives of people from the streets of Leeds.

The film stars young actors Ajay Megson, who plays Asbo, and Katie Germaine, who plays Chelsy.
