A new AI-based screening system for psoriasis that analyses photographs of skin lesions with up to 95% accuracy is expected to improve healthcare access and timely treatment in Thailand.
The initiative is part of the government’s push to strengthen public healthcare through digital technology, enabling faster, more convenient and comprehensive services, deputy government spokeswoman Ploythalay Laksameesaengjan said on Tuesday.
Developed by the Institute of Dermatology under the Department of Medical Services, the AI Psoriasis system uses artificial intelligence to evaluate the redness, thickness and scaling of psoriasis lesions from photographs.
It is designed to standardise and speed up assessments, particularly in areas without dermatologists.
Research dataset testing showed the system achieved up to 95% accuracy, although further validation is needed in real-world settings and among more diverse patient groups.
The initial rollout will cover healthcare facilities participating in projects with the Institute of Dermatology that have suitable personnel, data systems and referral capabilities.
Ms Ploythalay said the system would help people obtain screening closer to home, reduce travel, speed referrals to specialists and provide a model for developing AI support tools for other skin diseases.
