New $700m sports stadium planned for SA

Adelaide Entertainment Centre: too small, tired and in the wrong place. (AAP)

A plan to build a new $700 million indoor sports and entertainment stadium in central Adelaide has been unveiled with Premier Steven Marshall saying it will "enliven" the city's CBD.

Mr Marshall has revealed details of the proposed Riverbank Arena, one year out from the next state election.

"It's a project we feel strongly about. This is a project which will transform our CBD," the premier told a business gathering on Friday.

The new complex will be built alongside the existing Adelaide Convention Centre and replace the Adelaide Entertainment Centre.

It will boost the seating capacity for indoor sports, concerts and other events from about 8000 at present to 15,000.

"Don't get me wrong, the Adelaide Entertainment Centre has served South Australia well, it's been in place for more than three decades," the premier said.

"But it's too small, it's tired and, quite frankly, it's in the wrong place.

"What we're proposing with the Riverbank Arena is a brand new facility in the centre of our city."
