New 692-bed student accommodation in Nottingham could reach 13-storeys high

Plans have been revealed a 692-bed new student accommodation development in Nottingham city centre could reach up to 13-storeys high.

The huge development would take place on Brook Street if proposals are given the go-ahead, with two ground floor commercial units also being added to the building.

The site earmarked for student accommodation is the Bendingo building, a former housing aid building which is currently vacant.

The existing structure would be demolished with a new building, which could reach up to 13 storeys in height, being built in its place.

Under the plans, 55 car parking spaces would be added, along with a gym, study space and games room.

Writing on behalf of applicants GR No.25 Limited, Planning and Design Group state: "The proposal has the potential to revitalise the immediate neighbourhood by removing a negative, unusable existing building, a building which gives little to the experience of the surrounding context.

"Replacing it with a high-quality modern student accommodation building which will contribute to the vibrancy of the area.

"We want to develop a socially connected building with a focus on communal space and interaction, building a community that lives, studies and plays together."

Residents living nearby have previously expressed concerns that student accommodation at the site could be "over the top" as the building was earmarked for future development after being sold by Nottingham City Council last year.

The application will now be considered by Nottingham City Council's planning committee.
