New £650,000 rural Co-op store to open its doors within weeks

Co-op bosses have been getting paperwork in order ready for the opening within weeks of their new store in Killin.

Stirling District Licensing Board approved a provisional premises licence for the new-build store at at a meeting recently.

Co-op solicitor Eilidh McGuire said the store was almost complete and due to launch at the end of November.

She added: “The new site is to replace the existing Killin Co-op round the corner on Main Street. There is a lack of storage space at the old site and it has been a struggle to maintain the stock levels needed to service the village.

“This will be a significantly larger store so there will be various additional wines etc.

“This is a £650,000 investment and the new site will create approximately four new jobs. There is also a comprehensive training programme for staff and there is CCTV and other measures.

“There are no objections to the application and it’s simply an application to replace the recurrent arrangements at an existing store.”

Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park planners granted planning permission for the new 5000 square feet store to be built on part of a builder’s yard in Station Road earlier this year.

One objection was submitted to the planning application citing concerns including noise, traffic and design materials.

Killin Community Council, however, indicated support for the application.

In their decision, national park planners said: “The agent has advised that by moving to a larger premises with a dedicated service yard the Co-operative Group will be able to provide an improved service that will significantly benefit residents and visitors to Killin.

“In addition, as the Co-operative Group own the building from which they currently trade, they propose to subdivide the existing unit into smaller retail units and make these available for lease.

“As part of the development proposals, a total of 33 car parking spaces will be provided along with two spaces for the mobility impaired.

“The current food store is serviced by delivery vehicles which set down on the Main Street in front of the store. To maintain adequate stock levels two delivery vehicles attend the premises in the morning and another vehicle attends in the evening. As a result of the improved access arrangement and service yard and storage capacity, the delivery arrangements will be reduced.”
