New 5G masts will be installed in 2 areas of Nottinghamshire

New 5G masts will be installed in Stapleford and Nuthall to boost connectivity.

The telecommunications equipment will be put up on land next to UPS in Palmer Drive, Stapleford, and outside the Esso Petrol Filling Station off Hillingdon Avenue, Nuthall, on behalf of Vodafone.

"Vodafone customers expect to be able to use their mobiles and devices where they live, work and travel, " said a spokeswoman for Vodafone UK.

"With Cornerstone, who manage our planning applications, we have proposed two new sites, in Stapleford and Nuthall, to improve our 3G and 4G services and ensure our customers have strong and reliable coverage.

"At the same time, we plan to introduce 5G which we are currently rolling out across the UK.

"It offers faster speeds and stronger signals in busy crowded areas.”

Broxtowe Borough Council has agreed on the locations.

A statement included in a supporting document sent to the authority read: "5G is the next generation of mobile technology that will transform the role of mobile connectivity in society.

"Designed to support new applications through gigabit data rates, low latency and high reliability, it will also provide efficient support for larger numbers of connections, enabling the Internet of Things (IoT).

"In technical terms 5G delivers improved data rates (up to 100 times faster than current mobile networks), supporting virtually instant access to services and applications, with network latency significantly reduced."

The document also dismissed speculation that the spread of coronavirus is linked to 5G.

"WHO (the World Health Organization) states that there is no link between 5G and Covid-19, confirming that viruses cannot travel on radio waves and/or mobile networks.

"The WHO maintains that Covid-19 is spread through respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs, sneezes or speaks."

A spokeswoman for Broxtowe Borough Council added: "Both these prior approval applications have been granted.

"The prior approval process means the local planning authority has to determine whether or not the prior approval of the authority is required, as to the siting and appearance of the proposed development.

"It’s a lesser requirement than a planning application but still requires a prior approval application to be submitted and considered.

"In both these cases, it was determined no such prior approval was required."

It comes after the locations for new 5G equipment in and around the city were revealed earlier this year.
