New 50p coin released but there are only 525 of them

The Royal Mint has revealed their latest coin – but there's only a limited number available.

The original and well-recognised illustrations by E.H. Shepard of Winnie-the-Pooh have been added onto a UK coin for the first time.

Created by The Royal Mint in collaboration with Disney, the first official UK coin featuring Winnie-the-Pooh will form part of a wider collection of special 50p coins featuring Winnie-the-Pooh and friends that will be available later in the year.

While the coins will only be available to purchase through Royal Mint, there are four designs to choose from.

On sale will be brilliant uncirculated, coloured, silver proof and gold proof 50p coins.

The series will feature nine coins celebrating the inhabitants of the Hundred Acre Wood, with three released in 2020, featuring Winnie the Pooh, Christopher Robin and Piglet, and six more over the following two years.

However, there will only be 525 gold coins for sale - these are priced at £1,125 each.

But for those on a budget, the brilliant uncirculated version is just £10 and there's an unlimited number of them.

Daniel Thorne, product designer at The Royal Mint, said: “Working with original illustrations from E.H. Shepard, supplied to us by Disney, my biggest priority with the coin’s design was to ensure we do these wonderful images justice.

“From the honey bee motif that runs throughout the series, to the grassy mound Pooh is sitting on, we tried many different techniques to create the flawless effect of watercolour on the coin, eventually settling on the one you’ll see on the final version.”
