New £20m ASN school campus has been named after Ayrshire town's founder

A name has been chosen for a new £20 million super ASN school in Stevenston.

Senior councillors have decided to call the additional support needs school Lockhart Campus.

It was due to open in winter this year, but that plan has been delayed due to Covid-19 - with no definite date yet.

The campus will replace Haysholm, Stanecastle, James Reid and James MacFarlane schools and will be located beside the town's Auchenharvie Academy.

It bears the name of Stevenston’s founder Stephen Lockhart.

Parents and pupils took part in discussions about the matter and the most popular option put forward was ‘Castlehill.’

But it was felt there would be confusion with Ardrossan’s Castle Hill.

Other suggestions included Arranview, Clydeview, Seaview and Firthview.
North Ayrshire Council cabinet members had the final say and unanimously agreed on the name this week at a virtual meeting.
Wendy Rose has been appointed as the headteacher of the new school, which caters for children and teens from the age of three to 18.

Ms Rose was previously headteacher of Corsehill Primary in Kilwinning.

The Lockhart campus will sit alongside a respite and residential centre offering eight bedrooms for young people with complex needs.

The school will boast a swimming pool, hydrotherapy pool and outdoor classrooms as well as play areas.
The four schools to be amalgamated have been getting ready to come together.

Commenting on the new name for the merged campus, Councillor John Bell, responsible for education, said: “It wasn’t an easy decision to make and it wasn’t just a straightforward process of picking a name.

“All the names that were picked were really good, all would have been great choices, but Stephen Lockhart is such an important person in the town’s history we felt it was right that he was recognised.
“This development is going to be such a big asset to Stevenston and the wider North Ayrshire community for many years to come.”
