New £20 million cycle path planned to cover whole of Kilmarnock

A £20 million cycle and walking path measuring 28 kilometres has been planned for Kilmarnock.

The off-road route would form a figure of eight around the town – and will link to schools, the town centre, parks, community buildings and other landmarks.

It is known as the ‘Kilmarnock Infinity Loop’ and officials are trying to firm up funding for the project.

Work is scheduled to start next year if it goes ahead.

East Ayrshire Council leader Douglas Reid said: “This will encourage wellbeing and people to get out and about instead of getting into their cars.

“It will also make the most of our environment and help children get to school safely.”

He said the Covid pandemic has led to many people discovering “hidden gems” in the area, including Craufurdland Castle and Caprington Castle.

The Kilmarnock West and Crosshouse councillor said the funding process is “looking really positive” and there is “one major hurdle to go.”

The route aims to encourage more cycling and walking in the town and can be used by people heading to work and school.

As well as paths, the Kilmarnock Infinity Loop scheme would transform underused areas into green havens. Ideas being considered include an arboretum and public art.

Staff at East Ayrshire Leisure, the Ayrshire Roads Alliance and East Ayrshire Council are working on the active travel programme for Kilmarnock.

A paper submitted to a council cabinet meeting last month updated councillors on the proposal.

The paper said: “The Kilmarnock Infinity Loop will centre on infrastructure improvements that will create a 28km off-road, multi-use network of paths suitable for walking and cycling.

“The network forms a figure of eight around the town but also includes links to key destinations including schools, the town centre, community facilities, parks and open spaces and leisure and cultural places of interest.”
