New £10m gym and sports centre coming to north of Edinburgh in Trinity Academy revamp

A new gym and sports centre are planned for the north of Edinburgh, as part of a multi-million pound plan to revamp Trinity Academy.

The city council has set aside £10m to demolish the existing building at the Bangholm Recreation Centre and replace it with a new sports building.

If the plans are approved, the new centre will have a dance studio, café, fitness suite, a gym hall and a facility for outdoor sports.

Groups that currently use the Bangholm centre, such as the rugby team, will have their facilities maintained.

During school hours, it will be used by the 1,200 pupils at the redeveloped Trinity Academy, which is nearby. It will be open to the community the rest of the time.

Documents submitted to Edinburgh council's planning committee say: "The new proposal will be a new home for sports & outdoor pursuits within the local area and will be the base for a variety of users.

"Primarily the newsSports building will be the home of the Physical Education (PE) Department of Trinity Academy, located near to the main school site across Craighall Road.

"During school hours this sports building will be used by the school fulfilling their curriculum requirements. In the evenings and weekends the facility will be run by Edinburgh Leisure and be open to community use.

"The proposed Sports Building will have a four court sports hall, gym hall, dance studio and fitness suite with the appropriate changing facilities and toilet provision."
