New £1 pay-as-you-go gym launches in Merseyside

A '£1 gym' has opened in a Merseyside town, in a bid to help people get fit and healthy after lockdown.

YMCA Southport is offering a pay-as-you-train scheme so people can 'save pennies while losing pounds'.

Staff at the gym, on Hoghton Street, say they want to make the gym experience as easy as possible for customers.

Team member Matt Smith told the ECHO : "This is about helping people get fit and healthy without it costing a fortune.

"So many people sign up for costly gym memberships, don't end up going as often as they'd planned, or at all, and waste their money every month.

"This way, you're in charge. There are no contracts or direct debits. If you don't fancy training for a few weeks or even months, whether it be down to motivation or injury, you aren't losing out.

"Our goal is to help people to take care of their physical and mental well-being, whether it be in the gym, squash courts or sports in our sports hall.

"Everything we do is at a low cost for people to take part, we want to be as inclusive as we possibly can."

Anyone wanting to train at the gym can pop along and simply pay £1 per session.

YMCA Southport is the oldest children and young people's charity in the borough, and also provides an early years provision to children in its nursery. The centre plays a big part in Southport community life.
