Neville Hewitt is Jets Wire’s Player of the Game vs. Browns

Monday Night Football was an absolute disaster for the New York Jets, as they were demolished by the Cleveland Browns, 23-3.

In the midst of one of the worst game’s you’ll ever see, linebacker Neville Hewitt actually stepped up for the inside linebackers unit, which was without C.J. Mosley and Avery Williamson. For his being the bright light in an otherwise dark performance, Hewitt is Jets Wire’s Player of the Game for Week 2.

Hewitt took control of the middle of the defense with their star linebacker sidelined with a groin injury. He led the team with eight total tackles (four solo), one sack and a pass defense against the Browns.

Overall, it was a solid performance from the Jets inside linebackers. Rookie Blake Cashman also filled in nicely in his first career start in the NFL. He had six total tackles (two solo), half a sack and one pass defense.

While Monday night was ugly, the game showed that the Jets have solid depth at the inside linebacker position. Hewitt has proven that he can make plays on running backs and getting after the quarterback, while Cashman can play well in pass coverage.

The defense has plenty of concerns with its depth, but inside linebacker is not one of them. Hewitt will continue to get playing time this season with Williamson out for the year, so this game was one for him to build off of.
