Never-never (be alone) land

Tawil Bunsong, 82, uses a walker to move around his house in the Rung Manee Pattana community in Bangkok's Wang Thonglang district. Several activities are provided for the elderly in the community, including exercises, in a bid to keep them in good health and spirits. Somchai Poomlard

Unlike other urban areas where people commonly live alone and the elderly stay indoors, the Rung Manee Pattana community in Bangkok's Wang Thonglang district is serving as a role model for the social activities and healthcare services it offers to senior citizens.

Tawil Boonsong, 82, recently enjoyed the traditional rod nam dam hua ceremony (seeking a blessing from respected elders), which is held in the community every year to mark the Songkran festival.

He said he was happy with the community-organised event, which gave him a chance to meet many of his peers. He also got to see children dousing each other with water to celebrate Songkran.
