'Never mind the striker!' - Nottingham Forest fans offer unique verdict on £6m Peterborough United transfer links

Nottingham Forest are said to be plotting a move to sign £6m Peterborough United striker Ivan Toney - but they are facing competition from West Brom, Rangers and German giants Red Bull Leipzig.

The 24-year-old bagged 26 goals in 39 appearances for Posh before the League One season was curtailed and has a year left to run on his contract.

BristolLive claim that the former Bristol City target is on the Reds’ radar, as well as catching the eye of Championship promotion rivals, the Baggies.

Toney started his career at Northampton Town, before joining Newcastle United in 2015.

He had loan spells at Barnsley, Shrewsbury, Scunthorpe United and Wigan Athletic before heading to Peterborough two years ago.

His fine form for Posh this term has caught the eye, but Forest are more interested in their club poaching Peterborough's top scout than Toney.

In recent years, the London Road club have seen Dwight Gayle, Britt Assombalonga, Matty Godden and Conor Washington all arrive at the club as relative unknowns and secure moves to bigger clubs.

One wrote on Facebook: "They have a habit of finding good strikers, Peterborough."

Another said: "Agreed. Forest should be stealing there scout, never mind the £6m striker."

Martin Maher wrote: "I hope he's like another Britt [Assombalonga], but the price is high and the risk he might struggle."

And Karlos Oakden replied: "Find out who they want to sign to replace [Toney] and buy that one for next to nothing."
