'Never in Doubt' Nicola Sturgeon praises Scotland team after stunning victory at Hampden

Scots got a welcome bit of good news last night with the national team's nerve-shredding win on penalties against Israel at Hampden.

After the dark times of late brought on by the coronavrius pandemic and the country being plunged into further lockdown restrictions, people finally had reason to celebrate.

And those leading the cheers were some of the nation's most well-kent faces, including First Minister Nicola Sturgeon.

The FM sent a tribute to the squad on Twitter shortly after they beat Israel in penalties 5 -3.

She shared the full time score and wrote: "Never in Doubt."

Her sentiments in using the phrase synonymous with the team was echoed by Line of Duty star Martin Compston.

Still Game creator Greg Hemphill was in a delighted state of shock at the shock result of the shoot-out, referencing the spooky alternative universe from Netflix smash-hit Stranger Things.

He added: "Scotland won a game on penalties. We are in the upside down world and I’m not leaving."

Scotland are now just one game away from their first major finals tournament since 1998.

Only a victory in Serbia on November 12 separates them from Euro 2020.

Due to the global health crisis, players performed in at an empty national stadium.

Scotland took to the pitch without a raft of key members due to call-offs caused by Covid-19 protocols and injury.

But now on a six-game unbeaten run, the squad is feeling as positive as fans were left last night.

Andy Robertson paid tribute to the missing supporters, saying: "We’ve deserved a night like this for a long time, too long in fact! This is for you Scotland!! The only thing missing was the tartan army being there! "
