'Never getting there' - Rio Ferdinand makes Manchester United admission after watching Liverpool performance

Rio Ferdinand has outlined the gulf in class between Liverpool and Manchester United following Jurgen Klopp’s side's 2-0 win over Atletico Madrid.

The Reds booked their place in the last-16 of the Champions League with a comfortable win over 10-man Atletico at Anfield on Wednesday night.

Diogo Jota and Sadio Mane were both on target for the Reds as they extended their unbeaten start to the season to 16 games.

While in contrast, United still have plenty of work to do to ensure they qualify from their group following a last-gasp 2-2 draw with Atalanta on Tuesday.

And in the Premier League, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side find themselves five points behind the Reds and seven off top spot after being beaten 5-0 by the Reds two weeks ago.

But Ferdinand believes both sides’ results in Europe this week further highlighted the difference between both clubs at the minute.

He said: “I think if you look at the contrast with United’s game yesterday it really just highlights the contrast of the game. This is a team who are in complete control.

“They’re in control of every situation going on and yes they’re on a great streak, unbeaten run, but it’s controlling games and really turning the intensity up, using the crowd and having that complete control.

“Whereas yesterday was disarray and trying to get to a point of controlling but never getting there.”

Before Ferdinand continued to BT Sport:“[Liverpool’s six game loss last season] Would’ve hurt their pride. I think it would’ve hurt a few.

“Someone like Trent Alexander Arnold, all he knew about was coming in and winning at Liverpool. He’s always been known as a success at that club - a Champions League winner, he’s won the league - quick, early part of his career.

“He doesn’t understand losing yet. Have a season of that and all of a sudden ego takes a bit of a shattering which is normal and that would’ve been a domino effect through the squad.

“That then reconfigures, ‘we are here’, there’s a shift. The mentality is back on to go again and win and it shows the culture that he’s got at that club is the right one.”
