'Never forgotten': The hero firefighter who died in arson attack on Bristol supermarket

Tributes have been paid to Bristol firefighter Fleur Lombard on the 26th anniversary of her death.

Fleur was just 21 when she and her crew were dispatched to a fire started by arsonist Martin Cody at Leo's Supermarket in Staple Hill on February 4, 1996.

On arrival, Fleur went in the front of the building to search for missing people and fight the blaze, but flames suddenly filled the room and she died from the intense heat.

Avon Fire and Rescue Service posted a tribute on Twitter: "Remembering Fleur Lombard: 26 years on.

"Today we remember Fleur Lombard, an AF&RS firefighter who tragically lost her life whilst attending a fire in Staple Hill.

"Staff from across the Service will mark the day with a minute’s silence at 11am.

On graduating in 1994, Fleur received the Silver Axe Award, for most outstanding recruit in her training school. Fleur was the only female firefighter to die on duty in peacetime Britain.

Fleur grew up in Derbyshire where she first worked as a firefighter on a retained basis alongside being a school classroom assistant.

She moved to Bristol to be part of Blue Watch at Speedwell Fire Station.

Fleur's name was chosen for the Intercity Express Train after being nominated as one of 100 Great Westerners by Bristol East MP Kerry McCarthy in a project supported by Bristol Live and the Western Daily Press.

The fire at Leo's Supermarket was deliberately started by security guard Martin Cody, then aged 21, on his first day at work. He phoned a colleague to say the fire was "a good one".

Cody was sentenced at Exeter Crown Court to seven and a half years in prison for manslaughter and arson.
