A server shares a little-known faux pas of guests who bring a cake to a restaurant for a celebration. Viewers say they are mortified when they realize.
In a video with over 253,000 views, TikToker Lydiarenae (@lydiarenae) posts a selfie of her lying on her side. “Stronger” by Kelly Clarkson plays in the background.
On-screen text reads, “I need yall to know that if I’m ur server and u have a whole a– cake with you and dont offer me a piece u have ruined the rest of my shift and probs my day too.”
Should you offer your server a piece of cake?
In the comments, other servers agree that not receiving a slice of cake that they have to cut themselves leaves them feeling dejected.
“One time i had a table who offered cake to the surrounding tables, complete strangers. every table took some and my table still had plenty left. they boxed it up and took it home. offered me none. it was a banana pudding cake. i wanted some so bad. i think about them all the time. it’s been 2 years,” one shares.
“Honestly my entire week, and I could write a dissertation about how precovid people were MUCH more generous with the cakes and cupcakes they would bring into restaurants,” another writes.
“I had a party come in with two giant cheesecakes from the Cheesecake Factory once. They took one and a half cheesecakes home and I didn’t get a slice. It’s been almost 4 years and I am still upset,” a third says.
“Had to pack up a gorgeous key lime pie the other day after they offered some to another table. guys what about me,” a fourth adds.
Servers on the subreddit r/Serverlife agree that offering cake to the restaurant staff is good etiquette.
“Absolutely. If you offer me a piece, it feels like you’re welcoming me in to the celebration and that’s always welcome,” a commenter writes.
“I served a 20 top a couple of weeks ago and they had the most delicious looking cake. They were a super easy party and tipped decently but didn’t leave any cake and I was very bummed lol,” another says.
How did viewers react to the server’s disappointment?
In the comments, restaurant guests who haven’t offered their server cake say they’re mortified.
“I would have never considered a server would want a piece of cake. Truly I would have thought it’d be weird to offer some food from outside to someone. Will now always offer a slice !!” one commenter says.
“I never realized this was an option,” another writes.
“Saving this so i never let another server down again,” a third comments.
Other servers share their tips on how to ask guests for a slice.
“When I see my table bring in a cake I start the meal with ‘oh did they tell you about the cake cutting fee up front?’ ‘Whattttttt?!’ ‘Oh yeah, it’s a slice for me’ WORKS EVERY TIME,” one writes.
“If they let me cut it up i’m giving myself a piece no matter what. and expo too LOL,” another jokes.
