'Never be as significant' - Gary Lineker sends touching message to Marcus Rashford

Gary Lineker has taken to social media to send a touching message to Marcus Rashford after he was the victim of online racist abuse.

Rashford, along with team-mates Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka, all saw their social media pages flooded with racist comments after England’s Euro 2020 final defeat to Italy.

All three missed their penalties in the 3-2 shootout defeat at Wembley after the game finished 1-1.

Hundreds also gathered at a mural of the Manchester United star for an anti-racism demonstration on Tuesday night.

The mural in Withington, where Rashford grew up, was vandalised after England's defeat to Roberto Mancini’s side on Sunday night.

The work has since been covered in supportive hand-written messages of support and respect for Rashford.

And taking to Twitter on Tuesday evening, Lineker wrote: “There is not a player in history that has not erred on the field at some point.

“Whatever you achieve in the game, which, I’m sure will be something special, it will never be as significant as what you’ve accomplished in filling the lunch boxes of hungry children.”

Rashford has been campaigning on the issue of food poverty for some time and has forced major government policy changes with his work.

While on Tuesday, Police confirmed that they had arrested a man over an allegedly racist tweet sent to Rashford.

West Mercia Police said the suspect was detained on suspicion of inciting racial hatred following reports of an inappropriate tweet posted on Sunday.

The 50-year-old man, from Powick, near Worcester, who was not named by police, has since been released under investigation.

Inspector Pete Nightingale, from Worcester police station, said: "We encourage people to make these reports and are pleased with the speed at which we have been able to deal with this incident.

"We continue to work with the local football community and have links with the local clubs to ensure that this behaviour is dealt with appropriately."
