Neutral umpires set to be scrapped by ICC amid coronavirus pandemic

Neutral umpires could be scrapped when the ICC cricket committee meets via conference call on Monday.

The change in officiating is seen as a necessity to get international cricket under way again and could result in the idea of neutral umpires being eradicated from the game full-time.

The ICC introduced at least one neutral umpire per Test match back in 1994, which was extended to two in 2002.

But with cricket looking to keep travel to a minimum in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, cricket bosses are pushing for umpires from the home Test nations to officiate.

Such a move is likely to be backed long-term, in part down to the back of the decision review system (DRS) in place in the international game today.

Other issues on the agenda are around how to shine the ball with sweat and saliva likely to be banned, and the potential use of in-match substitutes should players fall ill for example.
