Network Rail warns of New Year disruption on major route

Passengers are being warned of disruption on a major North West train route over the new year as people travel to celebrate.

Network Rail have shared a list of works taking place across the North West - and one of the routes could affect people travelling to and from Liverpool.

Major Christmas railway improvements have now been completed, but there are more to come over New Year and it could pose a problem to passengers.

Thousands of Network Rail staff worked round the clock between Christmas Eve and December 27 as part of Britain’s Railway Upgrade Plan.

The works included track being replaced in Tring and Crewe, railway drainage improvements between Preston and Lancaster, and preparation for the full resignalling of Birmingham New Street in 2022.

However, the work isn't finished yet - and staff will be replacing track and renewing a foot crossing near Warrington between January 1 and 2.

Warrington's stations are often included on train journeys in and out of Liverpool, particularly for passengers heading further north over New Year.

Tim Shoveller, managing director of Network Rail’s North West and Central region, said: “While people enjoyed time with their friends and families over Christmas, thousands of Network Rail staff worked tirelessly to maintain and improve the railway to provide passengers with better, more reliable journeys.

"I thank passengers and our lineside neighbours for their patience while we carried out this vital work to secure the future of our network as part of our multi billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan.”

Tim added: “I know there is never a good time to disrupt journeys while we carry out large pieces of work but whenever possible we do this at times when there are significantly fewer people travelling by train, such as over Christmas and the New Year.

"I appreciate people have important plans so I urge them to please plan ahead and check before they travel for the latest journey information.”

Passengers whose journeys could be affected are being urged to plan ahead and check before they travel at  www.nationalrail.co.uk  or with their train operator.
