Network Rail issues warning over near misses on the tracks with chilling video

A shocking video has been produced by Network Rail Scotland illustrating the danger of getting distracted while crossing rail tracks.

The clip, made up of camera footage from various railway crossings across the UK, was published alongside the warning, "Don't take chances at level crossings. Distraction kills."

The video starts with several clips of pedestrians and cyclists getting distracted when crossing the rail tracks, taken from the local CCTV, and progresses to show a number of horrifying near misses with rushing trains filmed from the driver's cabins.

In the end, viewers can watch a jaw-dropping moment of a pair carrying a pushchair away from the tracks right in front of the moving train.

The video was put together by Network Rail Scotland, the company that owns, operates and develops Britain's railway infrastructure, in an attempt to encourage people to take level crossings seriously and approach them with care and full attention.

This comes amid the company's safety campaign aimed at educating people about the railway infrastructure's apparent - and hidden - dangers.

Their most recent campaign, You vs Train, includes the tragic story of 11-year-old Harrison Ballantyne, who was hit by 25,000 volts of electricity by overhead power cables after straying into a rail freight depot to retrieve a lost football, and died at the scene.

You can read more about the regrettable incident and watch Harrison's Story video here.
