Network Rail issues statement to Scots ahead of Storm Floris

SCOTLAND’S railway operator said it is preparing for disruption next week as Storm Floris is expected to bring high winds and heavy rain to much of the country.

The Met Office issued a warning from 6am on Monday until 6am on Tuesday for the entirety of Scotland, with gusts of wind up to 70mph expected in some coastal areas.

The warning comes after the Met Office named the sixth storm of the season, Storm Floris, which is expected to bring unusually strong winds.

Ahead of next week, Network Rail said its meteorologists are closely monitoring forecasts and are supporting preparations across Scotland’s railways.

In a statement, Network Rail said inspections are being stepped up over the weekend to identify and reduce potential hazards ahead of the storm.

Teams will also be on standby throughout, including chainsaw-trained staff ready to respond to any trees or debris that may be blown onto the tracks.

Network Rail said speed restrictions may also be introduced in a bid to help reduce the risk of trains hitting obstructions and ensure the safety of passengers and staff.

Ross Moran, route director at Network Rail Scotland, said teams are putting plans in place with staff on standby to respond quickly to any damage that the storm may cause.

He said: “We know Storm Floris is likely to bring unseasonably strong winds and disruption and we’re working hard behind the scenes to make sure we’re ready. Our priority is keeping passengers and our staff safe.

“Our teams are already carrying out extra inspections and putting plans in place, including extra support. That work will continue throughout the storm, with staff on standby to respond quickly to any damage.

“We’re asking passengers to check their journey before travelling on Monday or Tuesday and we’ll be doing everything we can to keep people informed.”

Mark Ilderton, ScotRail service delivery director, urged customers to stay up to date with the latest travel advice through [[ScotRail]]'s website, app, and social media channels.

He said: “With strong winds and heavy rain expected to impact parts of the country, we’re encouraging customers to check their journey before travelling on Monday and Tuesday.

“The safety of our customers and staff is always our top priority, so we’ll be working closely with Network Rail to monitor the situation and we’ll keep people moving, wherever possible.”
