Nets waive Vasquez, will promote Ferrell from D-League

Veteran guard Greivis Vasquez, who recently injured his surgically repaired right ankle, was waived Wednesday by the Nets.

The Nets announced that they signed rookie Yogi Ferrell from their D-League team, the Long Island Nets, to take the vacant roster spot and shore up their depth problem at point guard.

The Nets also announced that guard Isaiah Whitehead was diagnosed with a concussion on Wednesday and will remain out until he is symptom free, as required by the NBA's concussion policy.

Vasquez underwent surgery last December but made it back in time to play the entire preseason. However, he left the Nets' third game at Milwaukee with soreness in his right ankle.

"Greivis did everything we asked of him and more to try to get back on the court at full strength," Nets general manager Sean Marks said in a statement. "The passion, grit and perseverance he has shown since he joined the team have been remarkable. We are thankful to Greivis for all of his efforts and wish him well in the future."

Vasquez averaged 2.3 points and 1.7 assists while playing 12.9 minutes per game for the Nets. But his injury coupled with a left hamstring injury to starting point guard Jeremy Lin severely depleted the Nets' depth at point guard, where Whitehead has been forced into a starting role and veteran two-guard Sean Kilpatrick often has been pressed into service. Ferrell spent training camp with the Nets and is familiar with coach Kenny Atkinson's system.
