NEW YORK _ Kyrie Irving isn't waiting for Kevin Durant to run New York.
The Nets point guard, speaking Thursday night at a promotional event, hyped up the fans ahead of Friday's game against the Knicks by declaring a "take over."
"We're dressed in that all-black all year. We got a lot, a lot of goals to accomplish this season," Irving said in a short video captured by Twitter user @Jengabcel. "The team is excited. Obviously we know in the months to follow, we got a sleeping, sleeping monster that's on our team right there.
"So for real, that's my best friend and I want to send good health to him. But for the time being, we're going to take over the whole entire city. It's about us."
The "sleeping giant," of course, is Durant, who is recovering from an Achilles tear and may or may not play this season. By signing "best friends" Durant and Irving, the Nets were big winners in free agency while the Knicks didn't even get a meeting with their top targets.
The Nets are giving away 10,000 Irving jerseys at Friday night's game, a move that has been interpreted as needling their cross-town rival. Irving scored 50 points in his debut Wednesday but missed the potential winner in overtime of a 127-126 defeat to the Timberwolves.
