The Netherlands are celebrating opening their Euro 2020 campaign with a victory... but it was far from plain sailing in Amsterdam.
Denzel Dumfries’ header with five minutes remaining ultimately settled a Group C thriller at the Johan Cruyff Arena.
After wasting a number of first-half chances, Frank de Boer’s side had looked to be cruising towards an impressive win courtesy of two goals in six second-half minutes from former Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum and target man Wout Weghorst.
But Andriy Shevchenko’s Ukraine mounted a brilliant fightback with a wonder strike from West Ham’s Andriy Yarmolenko and a fine Roman Yaremchuk header.
PSV Eindhoven star Dumfries’ first senior international goal then proved decisive as the Dutch dramatically claimed all three points from their first match at a major tournament since 2014.
