Netherlands vs Sweden LIVE: World Cup 2026 result, updates and reaction as Dutch run riot

Big-game player: Cody Gakpo added to his major tournament tally with two goals against Sweden - (Getty)

Netherlands vs Sweden LIVE!

The Netherlands announced themselves as potential World Cup contenders as they thrashed Sweden 5-1 in Houston on Saturday. The Oranje bounced back in some style after conceding a last-gasp equaliser to Japan in their opening game, taking control of Group F as head coach Ronald Koeman emphatically answered his critics. His surprise decision to start Brian Brobbey over Crysencio Summerville paid off quickly, with the Sunderland striker prodding home twice inside the first 17 minutes following crosses from Cody Gakpo and Denzel Dumfries.

Sweden were caught cold but improved after the first hydration break, with Viktor Gyokeres and Yasin Ayari both forcing strong saves from Bart Verbruggen as Gustaf Lagerbielke also saw a header from a free-kick rightly ruled out for offside. Their hopes of a comeback were extinguished quickly after the break by Gakpo, who added his second seven minutes later.

Newcastle’s Anthony Elanga was a bright spark for the Swedes off the bench as he reduced the deficit after combining with Alexander Isak, though Graham Potter’s side could not push on and they conceded again late on as substitute Summerville made it two goals in as many games for his country at this tournament.

Netherlands vs Sweden highlights

  • GOAL! Summerville nets another fine strike
  • GOAL! Isak tees up Elanga as Swedes respond
  • GOAL! Gakpo adds a quick-fire second
  • GOAL! Gakpo makes it 3-0 after half-time
  • NO GOAL! Lagerbielke header ruled out for offside
  • GOAL! Brobbey at the double from Dumfries delivery
  • GOAL! Brobbey taps home early Gakpo cross

Netherlands 5-1 Sweden

20:03 , George Flood

Absolutely emphatic from the Dutch and a real statement of World Cup intent.

They now top Group F on four points and will be going into the last 32.

The perfect way to bounce back from that frustrating last-gasp draw with Japan and a fine riposte to his critics from Ronald Koeman, whose decisions have been criticised this week.

They all paid off handsomely today though, not least the shock call to start Brian Brobbey up front.

Sweden are the first team ever at the tournament to win their opening game by four goals, and then lose by four goals straight afterwards.

A lot for Graham Potter to work on ahead of a tough final group game against Japan.

Full-time

Netherlands 5-1 Sweden

19:58 , George Flood

96 mins: One last-gasp chance for Sweden from a corner, but Lagerbielke’s latest set-piece header is easily saved by Verbruggen.

That should be that.

Netherlands 5-1 Sweden

19:56 , George Flood

Into five minutes of added time in Houston.

Van Dijk was down a few minutes ago for the Netherlands holding his side, but quickly got back to his feet.

Summerville now receives medical attention in the corner after being caught by an accidental knee to the face from Zeneli, who quickly calls for the physios.

Thankfully he looks okay.

GOAL! Netherlands 5-1 Sweden | Crysencio Summerville 89'

19:52 , George Flood

89 mins: Another fine World Cup goal from the West Ham winger!

The Swedes are cut apart by another incisive passing move, with Summerville running at Lindelof before delightfully pulling his shot into the bottom corner.

Nordfeldt had no chance.

From 5-1 winners to 5-1 losers in the space of five days for Sweden.

Life comes at you fast at the World Cup. What a result for the Netherlands.

Another few million onto West Ham’s asking price for the in-demand Summerville, who also scored a great goal against Japan last weekend.

Netherlands 4-1 Sweden

19:50 , George Flood

88 mins: The Swedes are still carrying a threat late on in Houston, even if any sort of result is now well beyond them.

Ali has been bright off the bench and now drives into the side netting.

Netherlands 4-1 Sweden

19:48 , George Flood

85 mins: An acrobatic one-handed save from Verbruggen as Isak lets fly from range for Sweden.

His next stop is more conventional as another shot comes his way from distance.

Netherlands 4-1 Sweden

19:44 , George Flood

83 mins: This is a dangerous looking counter-attack from Sweden, but Elanga chooses the wrong option and the opportunity is lost.

Netherlands 4-1 Sweden

19:42 , George Flood

81 mins: Tottenham midfielder Bergvall catches Liverpool’s Gakpo high and becomes the third Swedish player to have his name taken by referee Michael Oliver.

He can have no complaints.

Netherlands 4-1 Sweden

19:41 , George Flood

79 mins: Potter looks to his bench once more with just over 10 minutes to play under the roof in Houston, where the weather outside appears to be turning stormy.

Taha Ali replaces Ayari.

Netherlands 4-1 Sweden

19:40 , George Flood

77 mins: Momentary panic inside the Dutch box as Sweden ratchet up the pressure, but they survive as new Spurs man Van Hecke leads their defensive effort once more.

The Netherlands have tried their luck at the other end a couple of times, with Summerville now blasting off target.

Potter is furious as Lindelof is penalised for a foul on Memphis.

Netherlands 4-1 Sweden

19:37 , George Flood

75 mins: Ayari persistently tries to rugby tackle Gravenberch and rightly receives a booking from Michael Oliver.

As expected, the hydration break appears to have removed all (albeit obviously unlikely anyway, given the scoreline) threat of a Sweden fightback.

Bin them off, honestly. Ridiculous.

Netherlands 4-1 Sweden

19:34 , George Flood

The action has resumed, with Koeman taking off early two-goal hero Brobbey.

The Netherlands’ all-time leading scorer, Memphis Depay, is his replacement.

His second substitute appearance at this World Cup after recovering from a thigh injury suffered on club duty in Brazil with Corinthians.

Netherlands 4-1 Sweden

19:33 , George Flood

Some of the loudest boos of the tournament greet the second hydration break.

Will it take the sting out of Sweden’s comeback attempts, led by Elanga?

Netherlands 4-1 Sweden

19:31 , George Flood

Sublime skill from Elanga to nutmeg Van de Ven on the byline and weave his way into the Netherlands box once more.

A chance doesn’t come, but the Newcastle man has shone for Sweden here after coming off the bench.

He’s using his pace and trickery to cause the Dutch real problems and is linking up well with Isak in particular.

We should mention that Koeman made two pre-planned midfield changes after the Sweden goal, with Reijnders and De Jong replaced by Til and Koopmeiners.

Netherlands 4-1 Sweden

19:26 , George Flood

Sweden go in search of a quick second goal that would make the rest of this second half very interesting indeed.

However, Van Hecke intervenes inside the box and a corner comes to nothing.

Now the Netherlands press for a fifth and Brobbey hunts his hat-trick, but this time he’s not successful.

GOAL! Netherlands 4-1 Sweden | Anthony Elanga 59'

19:22 , George Flood

59 mins: Finally a response from the Swedes and it’s one of their substitutes who scores.

Newcastle forward Elanga finishes coolly beyond Verbruggen after being teed up by Isak, who was too quick for Liverpool team-mate Van Dijk.

It’s raining goals in Houston. They couldn’t, could they?

Netherlands 4-0 Sweden

19:20 , George Flood

56 mins: Another long-range drive from Ayari fizzes over Verbruggen’s crossbar.

Gravenberch then misses the target at the other end.

Sweden have sent on Bergvall, Elanga and Zeneli for Bernhardsson, Nygren and Karlstrom.

GOAL! Netherlands 4-0 Sweden | Cody Gakpo 54'

19:16 , George Flood

54 mins: It’s officially a rout!

Isak loses the ball on the edge of the Netherlands’ box and the Oranje speed forward on the counter once again.

Gakpo cuts inside and drills into the bottom corner, past Nordfeldt at his near post.

The Liverpool man increases his hugely impressive haul of major tournament goals.

Who saw this coming?!

Netherlands 3-0 Sweden

19:15 , George Flood

52 mins: Leeds left-back Gudmundsson receives the first yellow card of the day for a foul on Summerville.

There was a bout of Sweden pressure that followed Gakpo’s goal, but it led to nothing.

What does Graham Potter do from here?

 (Getty)
(Getty)

GOAL! Netherlands 3-0 Sweden | Cody Gakpo 47'

19:10 , George Flood

47 mins: Another lightning fast start to a half from the Netherlands!

Substitute Summerville releases Dumfries, whose low cross just evades the hat-trick seeking Brobbey before being side-footed home at the back post by Liverpool star Gakpo.

Sweden have a huge mountain to climb now.

Netherlands 2-0 Sweden

19:07 , George Flood

Koeman is making one half-time change for the Netherlands.

Summerville has replaced Malen.

Back underway...

Netherlands 2-0 Sweden

18:59 , George Flood

So, the Dutch hold on during a heavy bout of late first-half pressure to take a 2-0 lead into the break in Houston.

It was a stunning start to the game from Ronald Koeman’s side, with the manager’s surprise decision to draft in Brian Brobbey for Crysencio Summerville proving inspired as the Sunderland striker scored twice within the first 17 minutes.

But once again at this World Cup we have seen the hydration break completely alter the momentum of a game.

Sweden have been the better side since then, with Gyokeres and Ayari forcing Verbruggen into strong saves and Lagerbielke seeing a close-range header from a free-kick ruled out for offside.

This one is far from over...

Netherlands 2-0 Sweden

Half-time

Netherlands 2-0 Sweden

18:50 , George Flood

50 mins: Sweden are piling on the pressure at the end of this first half, with two more saves from Brighton’s Verbruggen - including tipping a low strike from club team-mate Ayari around the post.

The Netherlands deal with a last-gasp corner and the half-time whistle finally sounds.

Netherlands 2-0 Sweden

18:48 , George Flood

48 mins: Ayari continues to cause the Dutch issues as he’s pushed over by Dumfries.

Gyokeres lines up a driven free-kick that is beaten away with two hands by Verbruggen.

Netherlands 2-0 Sweden

18:47 , George Flood

45 mins: Replays show that was the correct decision, with a few Sweden players narrowly offside there as that ball was delivered from the left by Nygren.

Into four minutes of added time at the end of this engrossing first half.

Netherlands 2-0 Sweden

18:45 , George Flood

44 mins: A deflected Dutch cross is gratefully claimed by Nordfeldt.

Sweden counter at pace and win a free-kick in a decent area.

A delicious delivery is headed in by Lagerbielke from close range as Verbruggen misses his punch!

But the Swedish celebrations are cut short by the offside flag. It won’t count.

Netherlands 2-0 Sweden

18:43 , George Flood

42 mins: Ayari blazes over the crossbar for Sweden after the Dutch are caught out momentarily in defence.

Some angry words are then exchanged by the Netherlands at the back, with Verbruggen visibly very annoyed.

They have done too much good in this first half to see their lead halved in cheap fashion.

Netherlands 2-0 Sweden

18:41 , George Flood

40 mins: An unmarked Dumfries leaps high into the air to try and connect with Gakpo’s cross, but he can’t make contact.

De Jong wins the ball back swiftly and effectively for the Netherlands in a dangerous area, with Malen’s low cross/shot evading everyone as it whistles wide of the back post.

Another warning for Sweden.

Netherlands 2-0 Sweden

18:39 , George Flood

38 mins: Gakpo whips in a low effort from just outside the box, but it’s held by Nordfeldt.

Sweden cannot afford to concede again here under any circumstances.

Netherlands 2-0 Sweden

18:37 , George Flood

35 mins: Malen is almost in again for the Netherlands, but the final ball is lacking on this occasion from the men in orange.

Sweden charge forward now at pace, with Gyokeres again stinging the palms of Verbruggen.

That was a slick counter.

Netherlands 2-0 Sweden

18:34 , George Flood

30 mins: Sweden have really woken up here as Isak now tries to slide in strike partner Gyokeres, but there’s not enough pace on the pass and the latter’s scuffed effort rolls straight to Verbruggen.

Good pressure from Van Hecke inside the box.

Netherlands 2-0 Sweden

18:32 , George Flood

Once again we’ve seen the hydration break turn the flow of a game on its head quickly.

Sweden look far more dangerous since the restart, with three useful attacks including Gyokeres perfectly teeing up Ayari with a cross.

But instead of heading goalwards, the Brighton midfielder decides to try and chest it down and the ball flies wide.

That was a real chance to halve the deficit.

Netherlands 2-0 Sweden

18:25 , George Flood

As has now become customary at this World Cup, heavy boos greet the arrival of the first hydration break.

The Dutch will be hoping this doesn’t disrupt their early rhythm and momentum, as we’ve seen in plenty of other games so far at this tournament.

Why is it needed in a game under a closed roof in an air-conditioned stadium?!

Netherlands 2-0 Sweden

18:22 , George Flood

20 mins: The one-way traffic continues, with Brobbey dominating the Swedish defenders time and time again.

The press to win the ball back quickly is so impressive from the Netherlands, whose energy and intensity remains off the charts.

Such a statement performance so far.

 (Getty)
(Getty)

GOAL! Netherlands 2-0 Sweden | Brian Brobbey 17'

18:18 , George Flood

17 mins: He’s only gone and done it again!

Brobbey stretches to nudge Dumfries’ low cross from the right beyond Nordfeldt and the Netherlands are rampant.

The Sunderland striker had only scored one senior international goal before today.

Sweden are all at sea and need to get a grip here, fast.

Netherlands 1-0 Sweden

18:16 , George Flood

13 mins: This is the sort of liquid, front-foot attacking football you expect from Dutch sides.

Sweden just cannot match their energy, ingenuity and intensity at the moment.

Reijnders now dances his way into the box, but he’s denied as a goal kick is signalled.

We will now have a change of ball.

Netherlands 1-0 Sweden

18:13 , George Flood

10 mins: End-to-end stuff early on in Houston, with the Netherlands looking so dangerous in wide areas and trying to deliver crosses into focal point Brobbey at every opportunity.

Now Sweden have to be alert to turn behind a dangerous right-wing cross from Dumfries intended for Gakpo.

Sweden are looking very vulnerable down the flanks so far.

Netherlands 1-0 Sweden

18:10 , George Flood

7 mins: Sweden almost hit back immediately, but Gyokeres’ effort is parried behind by Verbruggen.

They keep the pressure on, until their momentum is foiled by a debatable offside flag.

What a start to this game...

 (Getty)
(Getty)

GOAL! Netherlands 1-0 Sweden | Brian Brobbey 5'

18:07 , George Flood

5 mins: Koeman’s surprise selection decision pays off within just five minutes!

Brobbey initially lays off for Reijnders, with the Netherlands pouring forward quickly in a blur of orange as Gakpo streams down the left and eventually provides an inch-perfect cross for Brobbey to tap into the net from close range.

Devastating attack.

Netherlands 0-0 Sweden

18:05 , George Flood

4 mins: Another solid early intervention from Hien thwarts another Dutch attack inside the Sweden box.

But the Netherlands are charging forward quickly again...

Netherlands 0-0 Sweden

18:03 , George Flood

3 mins: An important early intervention from Sweden defender Hien as he stops Reijnders in his tracks.

A couple of combative early challenges.

Van Dijk steps up to catch Gyokeres offside, with the Dutch angered by how late that flag was raised on the far side.

KICK-OFF

Teams are out

17:54 , George Flood

Here come the players in Houston, where kick-off is at midday local time.

Premier League stalwarts Van Dijk and Lindelof lead out their respective nations.

There’s also a Premier League man in the middle today, with Michael Oliver on refereeing duties after recovering from an injury that saw him ruled out of his first scheduled match between Ivory Coast and Ecuador in Philadelphia last weekend.

Fellow English top-flight official Jarred Gillett, of Australia, is on VAR duty.

It’s time for the national anthems.

The Dutch have certainly gone experimental with their training kit and jackets...

Kick-off approaching

17:51 , George Flood

Final preparations at Houston Stadium, where the retractable roof will be closed and air conditioning put on for a comfortable match experience both on the pitch and in the stands.

By all accounts it is extremely hot in the city today, with thundery downpours expected.

But this match won’t be impacted at all.

New Tottenham connection in Netherlands defence

17:35 , George Flood

There are plenty of subplots and things to watch in this intriguing Group F fixture.

Chief among them for Tottenham fans will be how Micky van de Ven and Jan Paul van Hecke work together in the Dutch defence.

Spurs completed the £52m signing of Van Hecke from Brighton earlier this week and supporters will no doubt be keeping a close eye on his progress at the World Cup, where the absence of Arsenal’s Jurrien Timber due to injury has seen him guaranteed a starting berth alongside captain Virgil van Dijk in central defence.

Van de Ven is among the first names on the team sheet for Tottenham at centre-back, but plays at left-back at international level for the most part.

(Getty)

Why has Koeman benched Summerville?

17:28 , George Flood

The decision to bench Crysencio Summerville appears to be causing much bemusement among Dutch fans on social media.

The West Ham winger impressed and scored an excellent goal against Japan as he played 70 minutes on what was only his third senior Netherlands cap.

If he’s fully fit, it seems a strange call from Ronald Koeman for a game his side could really do with winning.

There has been plenty more transfer speculation around Summerville today, with the former Leeds star now being linked with Arsenal, Manchester United, Tottenham, Aston Villa and Paris Saint-Germain, among other clubs, with his exit from the London Stadium looking inevitable.

Presumably it will be Brobbey through the middle for the Oranje in Houston, flanked either side by Gakpo and Malen.

Sweden unchanged as Isak and Gyokeres paired again

17:09 , George Flood

As expected, Sweden are unchanged from their 5-1 drubbing of Tunisia in Monterrey.

That means that Arsenal striker Viktor Gyokeres and Liverpool’s record signing Alexander Isak are paired together in a lethal attack once more.

Brighton’s Yasin Ayari will hope to build on his two-goal haul in the opener from midfield, while Leeds’ Gabriel Gudmundsson has shaken off a knock to start along with Alexander Bernhardsson.

Also in midfield is Celtic’s Benjamin Nygren and Udinese captain Jesper Karlstrom.

Aston Villa defender Victor Lindelof captains Sweden and is joined at the back by Isak Hien and former Celtic man Gustaf Lagerbielke.

Goalkeeper Kristoffer Nordfeldt was once of Swansea City.

One Netherlands change as Brobbey replaces Summerville

17:03 , George Flood

Ronald Koeman makes one change to the Netherlands side who were held to a last-gasp 2-2 draw by Japan in Dallas last weekend.

It comes in attack, where, despite scoring in the opener, West Ham’s Crysencio Summerville makes way for Sunderland forward Brian Brobbey, who joins Liverpool’s Cody Gakpo and former Aston Villa man Donyell Malen.

All-time top scorer Memphis Depay is a substitute once again after returning from a thigh injury.

Dutch fans will be relieved to see Frenkie de Jong fit to continue in his place in midfield alongside Liverpool star Ryan Gravenberch and Manchester City’s Tijjani Reijnders.

Tottenham’s Micky van de Ven is again at left-back, with new Spurs team-mate Jan Paul van Hecke continuing in central defence alongside captain Virgil van Dijk.

New Real Madrid signing Denzel Dumfries is at right-back as usual, with Brighton’s Bart Verbruggen in goal.

Potter warns Sweden of Netherlands threat

16:38 , George Flood

Despite their contrasting results in the opening Group F fixtures last weekend, Sweden boss Graham Potter is under no illusions as to the challenge facing his side today.

The Netherlands are a clear step up from Tunisia, most people’s pick to win the group and some to even win the whole tournament after reaching the semi-finals of Euro 2024, where they lost to England thanks to Ollie Watkins’ last-gasp goal.

“We know we have to improve if we are going to take anything from this match,” Potter said.

“Tunisia was a good night for us - a good game and a good victory - but with the greatest respect, we're playing against a high-level opponent, the best team in the group, one of the favourites for the tournament.

“At the moment, we're not in a place to dream. We're just working, trying to improve every day, trying to make sure the players are ready to play the game.

“As I said before the first game, we know if we're not right and not together and not playing to our strengths, we can lose any game of football at this level.

“At the same time, if we play to our strengths and we are together, we have a chance to win and that's how we have to focus.”

Dutch fans bringing party atmosphere to Houston

16:31 , George Flood

It’s fair to say that the Dutch fans have been enjoying themselves ahead of kick-off in Houston.

The always brilliant Oranje supporters have created their usual party atmosphere, joined by Netherlands legends such as Edwin van der Sar and Wesley Sneijder.

Always one of the best and most colourful fanbases at major tournaments.

Potter: Isak and Gyokeres will get 'better and better' for Sweden

16:16 , George Flood

Sweden present an intriguing proposition at this World Cup - one they were fortunate to reach after a miserable qualifying campaign which was rescued by the appointment of former Chelsea and West Ham boss Graham Potter and a play-off place secured via the Nations League.

Though noticeably light in some areas, their attacking firepower is seriously impressive - as Tunisia found out to their cost in Monterrey last week, leading them to sack head coach Sabri Lamouchi after just one game at the tournament.

Potter was asked in the build-up to this meeting with the Netherlands if he believes that Alexander Isak and Viktor Gyokeres are the best strike partnership of any team at the World Cup.

“The answer is I don't know. I've not seen enough of all the others. It doesn't really matter,” he said.

“They are the best ones for us, that's the truth. We are so happy for them.

“Individually, fantastic players in their own right. Different qualities, different attributes.

“The challenge is to get the team functioning well, helping them enjoy their football and if they do that, then they are certainly a threat for any team.

"The challenge is we haven't had them playing together so much. So I think they will get better and better as they do that.

“In terms of the other night, it was a great start for us."

Koeman gives update on De Jong injury scare

16:04 , George Flood

Here is what Netherlands boss Ronald Koeman had to say at his pre-match press conference in Houston yesterday about Frenkie de Jong’s injury and that collision in training between Quinten Timber and Teun Koopmeiners.

"There was a collision which caused light concussion experienced by Quinten so he will not play this match. After this match, he might be ready,” Koeman said.

"But Frenkie also has minor complaints about his physical condition. He also did practice with other players.

“But let's see how he will be tomorrow. It is not clear. It is a question mark.

“I'm not sure, I don't know. It is below his belly, his injury.”

Netherlands vs Sweden prediction

15:55 , George Flood

Sweden were hugely impressive in their 5-1 thrashing of Tunisia, but the Netherlands should be made of significantly sterner stuff.

The Dutch will be desperate for a first win after that last-minute Japan equaliser.

Yasin Ayari scored a brilliant double against Tunisia, and will want to build on that today.

The strike partnership of Alexander Isak and Viktor Gyokeres may also significantly worry Virgil van Dijk et al.

We expect a tight game, with Sweden pulling off a bit of an upset and putting the Netherlands under massive pressure for the final round of group fixtures.

Expect the pitchforks to be out for Ronald Koeman.

Sweden to win, 2-1.

Sweden team news

15:49 , George Flood

Star Sweden strikers Alexander Isak and Viktor Gyokeres look set to be partnered together in attack for just the third time in a year.

They both started and scored in last weekend’s 5-1 demolition of Tunisia in Monterrey, with Brighton midfielder Yasin Ayari notching a brace and Mattias Svanberg also on target.

Graham Potter is not believed to be dealing with any new injury complaints and seems unlikely to change a team that was so impressive in their opener.

That is likely to mean that the likes of Tottenham’s Lucas Bergvall and Newcastle forward Anthony Elanga have to make do with places on the bench once more.

Sweden’s starting XI against Tunisia also included Leeds’ Gabriel Gudmundsson, Aston Villa defender Victor Lindelof - the captain - and Celtic midfielder Benjamin Nygren.

Netherlands team news

15:43 , George Flood

Frenkie de Jong has emerged as a surprise injury doubt for the Netherlands ahead of today’s game.

Though not always a starter for Barcelona, he is an instrumental part of Ronald Koeman’s midfield and played the full 90 minutes in last weekend’s 2-2 draw with Japan in Dallas.

However, Koeman revealed at yesterday’s pre-match press conference that De Jong was now considered a doubt to face Sweden having complained of an injury issue “below his belly”.

The Netherlands were already missing fellow midfielder Quinten Timber, who suffered concussion during an accidental training ground collision with team-mate Teun Koopmeiners.

Quinten’s twin brother Jurrien Timber, of Arsenal, was ruled out ahead of the tournament due to a persistent groin injury.
