Netherlands vs Northern Ireland previous meetings: From George Best to Johan Cruyff and Robin van Persie

Northern Ireland have beaten the Netherlands just once in six previous meetings dating back to the early-1960s.

The sole victory came in a World Cup qualifier in 1963 when Terry Neill and Johnny Crossan both scored in a 2-1 triumph in Belfast.

The six previous meetings went as follows…

May 1962 - Netherlands 4-0 Northern Ireland (friendly)

A team including 1958 World Cup stars Danny Blanchflower, Jimmy McIlroy and Peter McParland couldn’t prevent a heavy friendly defeat in Rotterdam.

Tonny van der Linden bagged a brace, while winger Sjaak Swart - who holds the all-time record for most club appearances for Ajax (603) - was also on target.

March 1965 - Northern Ireland 2-1 Netherlands (WCQ)

Terry Neill, who would go on to manage Arsenal to FA Cup glory in 1979, and Johnny Crossan were both on target in this World Cup qualifying win at Windsor Park.

Bertie Peacock was the manager and a young George Best, aged only 18, won his seventh cap in front of a crowd of almost 25,000.

April 1965 - Netherlands 0-0 Northern Ireland (WCQ)

Young Spurs keeper Pat Jennings kept a clean sheet on his seventh international appearance as Peacock’s men secured a goalless draw in Rotterdam.

Northern Ireland went on to finish second in the group to Switzerland, narrowly missing out on the 1966 World Cup by a point, a 1-1 draw in Albania costing them dear.

Oct 1976 - Netherlands 2-2 Northern Ireland 2 (WCQ)

Northern Ireland, with just one win in their previous seven games and under new boss Danny Blanchflower, celebrated a memorable result in Rotterdam.

Inspired by George Best, recalled to the side after a three year absence, the visitors secured a 2-2 draw with goals from Chris McGrath and Derek Spence.

Oct 1977 - Northern Ireland 0-1 Netherlands 1 (WCQ)

A crowd of 33,000 crammed into Windsor Park to witness a star-studded Dutch side captained by Johan Cruyff win with a 74th minute winner from Willie van der Kerkhof.

The defeat proved to be George Best’s last appearance in a green shirt, his international career ending on 37 caps at the age of 31.

June 2012 - Netherlands 6-0 Northern Ireland (Friendly)

Robin van Persie and Ibrahim Afellay helped themselves to braces apiece at the Amsterdam Arena as Northern Ireland shipped six goals for the first time in 51 years.

In an inexperienced line-up, James McPake won his first and only cap, Will Grigg made his debut and Roy Carroll returned to the fold after a six-year absence.
