Netherlands boss Ronald Koeman gives Manchester United target Matthijs de Ligt advice on who to sign for

Matthijs de Ligt has been told which factors are the most important as he weighs up which club to join this summer.

Manchester United have been linked with the outgoing Ajax captain, while Barcelona are said to be favourites to bring him to the Nou Camp.

De Ligt has previously said he will make a decision on his future after this week's Nations League finals, as the Netherlands prepare to face England in the semi final on Thursday.

And speaking ahead of that clash Oranje manager Ronald Koeman said he had spoken to De Ligt about his transfer decision, but insisted it would remain between the pair.

Koeman went on to hand De Ligt some advice over what he should prioritise as he makes his decision.

“We are really happy that we have these kind of defenders in the national team," Koeman explained. "He is only 19 & has to make a good decision on his future but he will.

“His big quality is that he’s only 19 and, at times, looks like the experience of a player who is 25.

"He’s a great professional, really clever. He can improve, of course... and he will be better. Hopefully he can choose a big club because he deserves that."

Explaining what De Ligt should look for in his new club, Koeman said regular playing time and the style of his prospective club should guide his thinking.

"I spoke to Matthijs about his future and that’s secret," he continued.

"The most important thing is to keep playing, getting minutes to develop your football. The way a club is playing is also an important decision in your choice.”

United may have an advantage over their rivals if De Ligt is looking for a guaranteed starting spot, as rivals Barcelona have Gerard Pique, Clement Lenglet and Samuel Umtiti on their books.

But Barcelona probably have the edge when it comes to playing style, as they can offer De Ligt a chance to join the current La Liga champions.
