Netherlands bans flights from UK for rest of the year after new coronavirus strain discovered

The Netherlands has banned flights from the UK for the rest of the year to fend off a new strain of coronavirus.

The ban comes into effect on Sunday morning and it's reported to last for the rest of the year.

Officials from the Netherlands said it will assess “with other European Union nations the possibilities to contain the import of the virus from the United Kingdom”.

The Dutch Government is already strongly advising its citizens not to travel unless absolutely necessary.

Officials added that they are monitoring developments and are considering additional measures regarding other modes of transport.

The Netherlands added that in early December, sampling of a case in the country had revealed the same virus strain as that found in the UK.

Britain alerted the World Health Organisation that the new variant identified this week appears to be accelerating the spread of Covid-19, saying it accounted for some 60% of the capital’s cases.

The news comes after Prime Minister Boris Johnson introduced Tier 4 restrictions to London and parts of South East England.

Along with introducing Tier 4 restrictions, the Prime Minister announced that previous Christmas bubbles plans had been scrapped.

Regions in Tier 1, 2 and 3 are now only to meet with their bubbles on Christmas day, a change from the previous rules which allowed five days.
