Netflix users lose access with crackdown on account sharing between households

Netflix is cracking down on viewers who share accounts between multiple households.

The platform is testing a feature which aims to stop people sharing passwords with others who live elsewhere.

Some users are already reporting seeing pop-up messages asking to confirm whether they live with the account holder.

The message reads: "If you don't live with the owner of this account you need your own account to keep watching."

The person watching is then asked to enter a code sent to the account holder.

As reported by Sky News, hundreds of these tests are done every year with the aim also to help with account security, and not just as a crackdown on password sharing.

Netflix say: "This test is designed to help ensure that people using Netflix accounts are authorised to do so."

According to the Netflix terms and conditions "any content viewed through the service are for your personal and non-commercial use only and may not be shared with individuals beyond your household".

Two years ago chief operating officer Greg Peters said there was no "big plans" to crackdown on account sharing, but that they would continue to monitor the situation.
