Netflix unveils colossal Tiger King viewing figures as coronavirus drives sign-ups

Streaming giant Netflix has released titanic viewing figures for hit docuseries Tiger King.

The documentary follows the life of exotic animal keeper Joe Exotic and his vicious rivalry with animal rights activist Carole Baskin.

The series quickly trended across the globe, spawning memes, opinion pieces, shocked reactions, and made Exotic and Baskin household names.

However, until now we haven't know how many people actually watched the series.

Netflix has now revealed in a first-quarter earnings call earlier this week that Tiger King has reached 64 million homes worldwide.

The cut-off point for what they use as counting as a view is if the account viewed an episode for more than two minutes.

Elsewhere, the Mark Wahlberg film Spenser Confidential reached 85 million people.

Netflix has also confirmed just how many people have signed up to the service in the first three months of the year.

16 million people have signed up for new accounts, no doubt buoyed by the coronavirus pandemic.

Prominent eMarketer analyst Eric Haggstrom told BBC News : "Netflix is and will continue to be the media company least impacted by Covid-19.

"Their business is a near perfect fit to a population that is suddenly housebound."

The streaming giant also expects to add another 7.5 million accounts before the end of June.

Meanwhile, its share prices have climbed by 30% this year already, showing continued success for the service.

It has continued to release new content since the pandemic began, including their answer to Love Island with new romance reality show Too Hot To Handle and will see Ricky Gervias comedy After Life return on Friday.

Another new addition to Netflix on Friday is action thriller Extraction from the makers of Avengers Endgame and starring Thor himself, Chris Hemsworth.

Extraction follows a mercenary (Hemsworth) who heads to Bangladesh on a mission to save the kidnapped child of an international crime lord.

Will it repeat the success of recent film release Spenser Confidential?

Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness is out now on Netflix.
