Netflix to adapt Roald Dahl's works including 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory' and 'Matilda' in animated series

Netflix is set to adapt some of Roald Dahl's best-known works in a new animated series.

The streamer unveiled on Tuesday plans to deliver its own takes on Charlie and the Chocolate FactoryMatilda, The BFG, The Twits, and more of Dahl's novels.

Dahl's family and the Roald Dahl Story Company, which manages the copyrights and trademarks associated with his work, have given Netflix the green light for the project.

Rather than sticking strictly to the narratives told by Dahl, Netflix wants to "expand" the stories in a family-friendly programme targeting viewers of all ages.

"Netflix intends to remain faithful to the quintessential spirit and tone of Dahl while also building out an imaginative story universe that expands far beyond the pages of the books themselves," the company said in a press release.

Dahl's widow Felicity Dahl said in a statement: “Our mission, which is purposefully lofty, is for as many children as possible around the world to experience the unique magic and positive message of Roald Dahl’s stories.

"This partnership with Netflix marks a significant move toward making that possible and is an incredibly exciting new chapter for the Roald Dahl Story Company. Roald would, I know, be thrilled.”

Other titles featured in the agreement include Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator, George’s Marvellous Medicine, Boy: Tales of Childhood, Going Solo, The Enormous Crocodile, The Giraffe and the Pelly and Me, Henry Sugar, Billy and the Minpins, The Magic Finger, Esio Trot, Dirty Beasts, and Rhyme Stew.

Production is scheduled to begin in 2019.
