The hugely popular Netflix series Mindhunter has been rumoured to return for a third series.
Series one of the psychological crime thriller aired in 2017, with the second following two years later.
According to Small Screen, director David Fincher and Netflix are discussing the prospects of another season.
"All I can really tell you about Mindhunter is that conversations between Netflix and Fincher are ongoing,” a source told the publication.
“They are discussing the possibility of bringing the show back for a third season.
"It's still very early days, but Fincher sounds more upbeat about the project.”
The possibility of a third series is great news for crime fans after the cast members were released from their contracts early last year.
Jonathan Groff, Holt McCallany, and Anna Torv were released from their contracts “indefinitely.”
A Netflix spokesperson told Entertainment Weekly that the actors' contracts have now lapsed as executive producer David pursues other projects with the streaming giant.
They said: "David is focused on directing his first Netflix film Mank and on producing the second season of Love, Death and Robots."
Continuing, the spokesperson revealed: "He may revisit Mindhunter again in the future, but in the meantime felt it wasn't fair to the actors to hold them from seeking other work while he was exploring new work of his own."
Even the director didn’t think season three would be a possibility as it wouldn’t be cost-effective.
When he was asked in October about whether the series has ended, he told Vulture : "I think probably.
"Listen, for the viewership that it had, it was an expensive show.”
David is best known for his films The Social Network, Se7en, Gone Girl and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.
Mindhunter seasons 1 and 2 are available on Netflix.
