Netflix sneakily releases Mercy Black the new Blumhouse horror film

It seems like we know everything that's heading Netflix 's way these days, so it was a bit of a surprise when the streaming site dropped Mercy Black.

The new Blumhouse horror film is written and directed by Owen Egerton, known for Blood Fest, and tells the story of a woman called Marina (Daniella Pineda).

Marina lures a classmate into the woods as she plans to sacrifice her to summon a being called Mercy Black.

She ends up spending 15 years in a mental institute for her troubles before she's released only to find out Mercy Black is now a viral sensation.

(Netflix)

Marina questions what is real and what is not, but becomes determined to stop the being before anything else goes wrong.

If this sounds familiar, then you're probably thinking of Slender Man. The case of Morgan Geyser and Anissa Weier, who stabbed her friend after she became obsessed with the viral figure, grabbed the world at the time.

The Slender Man came from a Meme on Creepypasta back in 2009, similar to Momo and other viral sensations that followed.

(Netflix)

Mercy Black comes from Blumhouse and it's the company's third release this year - the other two being Glass and Happy Death Day 2U.

There are another four set for this year. Jason Blum also helped produce Jordan Peele's Us movie.

Early reviews for Mercy Black are good with most saying it's grounding in a 'true story' gives it a creepy relevance. Egerton has said he was told if you remove the jump scares from a film you need to be unsettled bu what's left to have a good horror and that's apparent with Mercy Black.

Mercy Black is on Netflix now.
