Netflix set to hike prices for third time in as many years

For the third time in as many years, Netflix is hiking its prices.

The streaming giant will this week announce a €1 increase to its standard plan, raising the cost from €11.99 to €12.99.

And its premium plan will go up by €2, meaning users in that bracket will now pay €17.99 a month for the privilege of accessing their favourite series and movies.

Viewers in Ireland who avail of the basic offering won’t have to pay anything extra on top of what they’re already forking out, the Irish Times reports.

Existing customers will get an email this Thursday telling them about the increase, and will have a month’s notice before the increase applies to their account.

For new members, though, the price jump will apply from the off, with Netflix putting the increase down to the “significant investments” it says it has made in TV shows and films.

A spokesperson for the service said: “Our price change reflects the significant investments we’ve made in new TV shows and films, as well as improvements to our product.

“Our basic membership will remain at the same price ensuring as many people as possible can enjoy our content.”

The increase comes as Netflix battles for primacy in the streaming market, with Disney and Amazon Prime now offering stiff competition when it comes to attracting viewers.

The British and Irish market is Netflix’s second-most important globally, with €820 million spent this year on content in this part of the world.
