Netflix SCAM email is circulating - here's how to make sure you aren't fooled

It’s one of the most popular TV and movie streaming services around, which means unfortunately, Netflix is often targeted by scammers.

A new scam email is circulating amongst Irish Netflix users this week, which appears to be from Netflix itself.

According to Tech Radar , the scam email reads: “Dear customer, during the regular maintenance and verification processes, we have detected an error in your account.

“If your account information is not updated within 24 hours, your ability to access your account will be restricted.”

Despite looking pretty realistic, the email is a scam, and Netflix will very rarely ask for personal details via email.

In fact, Netflix’s website explicitly explains: “Never enter your login or financial details after following a link in an email or text message. If you're unsure if you're visiting our legitimate Netflix website, type www.netflix.com directly into your web browser.”

Thankfully, there are a number of ways to spot scam emails, and make sure your account is protected.

Jake Moore, a cybersecurity expert at ESET, said: “Telltale signs still lie in the fact they say ‘Dear customer’ to start the email rather than your name and they attempt to instil fear threatening restricted access to the account.

“Social engineering techniques use the principles of persuasion such as fear to entice people to do what they are told which has a far greater click rate.

What are YOUR chances of being hacked through security flaw?

“Netflix, and other companies used by hackers, will not kill your account without going through far more personal details with you and won’t ever use threatening communication.

“It is always worth ringing a number found on the genuine website to speak with customer service if you are ever doubtful of any correspondence.”
