Netflix scam email is circulating - here are the key signs it's a fraud

It’s one of the most popular video-streaming services around, so it should come as no surprise that Netflix is regularly targeted by scammers .

A new Netflix scam email is circulating that warns users that their account has been suspended, and urges them to ‘restart’ their membership.

The email reads: “Wе wеrе unаblе tо vаlidаtе уоur billing infоrmаtiоn fоr thе nехt billing сусlе оf уоur subsсriрtiоn thеrеfоrе wе'II susреnd уоur mеmbеrshiр if wе dо nоt rесеivе а rеsроnsе frоm уоu within 48Ноurs.

“Obviоuslу wе'd lоvе tо hаvе уоu bасk, simрlу сliсk rеstаrt mеmbеrshiр tо uрdаtе уоur dеtаils аnd соntinuе tо еnjоу аll thе bеst TV shоws.”

It then prompts you to click on a red ‘Verify Now’ button.

While the email features the Netflix logo and uses the same font as the tech giant, there are several key signs that it’s a scam.

The sender name is ‘ŊetfIix’, with a velar nasal symbol instead of an N, while the sender email address is clearly not a Netflix-owned address.

It also has several spelling and grammar mistakes - hallmarks of a scam email. For example, there’s no full stop at the end of the second sentence, while there’s an extra space between ‘Suspended’ and the exclamation point.

What are YOUR chances of being hacked through security flaw?

What to do if you receive the email

Netflix said: “Scammers can’t get any information from you unless you give it to them.”

It advises that if you receive a suspicious email, you should forward it to phishing@netflix.com, before deleting it entirely.

What to do if you’ve opened the link or provided personal information

If you receive the email and accidentally opened the link in it, don’t panic.

Change your Netflix password as soon as possible, and update your password on any websites where you use the same email and password combination.

It may also be worth contacting your bank if you entered any payment information, as it may have been compromised.
