Netflix's The Unlikely Murderer release date, cast and links to true story of murdered Olof Palme

Fans of true crime stories and drama will be eagerly awaiting the new Netflix, The Unlikely Murderer.

The show is a five-part Netflix Swedish-language original, based around the story of Stig Engström - named by prosecutors as the probable killer of the Swedish prime minister, Olof Palme.

It is based on a book of the same name by Thomas Pettersson, who spent twelve years researching the crime.

Pettersson said of the book, "When I started looking into the Palme murder in 2007 and discovered 'The Skandia man', I could barely believe my eyes."

"His testimony seriously deviated from every other testimony at the crime scene. It was so obvious 'The Skandia man' could be the murderer – why hadn't he been arrested and interrogated?"

The new Netflix series will be a part-fictionalised story based on Pettersson's findings.

When is The Unlikely Murderer release date?

All five episodes of The Unlikely Murderer will be released on Netflix on Friday, November 5, 2021.

What is The Unlikely Murderer about?

The story is based on an actual crime, the assassination of Olof Palme (the Swedish prime minister), committed in 1986 but is part fictionalised.

Netflix tells us that "The Swedish drama series is a fictional interpretation of how Stig Engström, the graphic designer who was named as the probable murderer of Sweden's prime minister Olof Palme, managed to elude justice right up to his death through a combination of audacity, luck and a perplexed police force."

Netflix adds: "What do we know about Stig Engström? How could the police let him get away, despite being on his track? The murder was not planned well, Engström did everything wrong from the beginning, and almost no one believed his lies about what he actually did during that fateful night 1986 in Stockholm, Sweden."

Is there a trailer for The Unlikely Murderer?

Netflix has released a 2.12 trailer (see below) for the series that gives a glimpse into what the show has in store.
