Netflix's The Haunting of Bly Manor leaves Scots bemused with Peter Quint's accent

Scots have already been getting into the Halloween spirit with the Netflix smash The Haunting of Bly Manor.

The story, which is set in the late 1980s, tells of a young nanny who is hired by a man to look after his niece and nephew at the family country house.

But as she arrives at the home, she slowly realises that there are ghosts haunting the premises.

The story is inspired by the Gothic novel The Turn of the Screw by Henry James and is the second entry in The Haunting anthology series.

One of the villains of the story is Peter Quint - a former employee at the manor and business associate of Henry Wingrave, who is the owner of the home.

Peter has gone missing since being accused of stealing from the manor, but Dani - the woman who has been trusted to look after the Wingrave children - later claims to have seen him in the manor’s grounds.

The series has been extremely popular on Netflix since it was released on Friday (Eike Schroter/Netflix)

One of Peter’s distinctive qualities is his Scottish accent, which has left some Scots a little bemused on social media.

“Peter Quint’s Scottish accent is so unbelievably bad, like oh my god”, said one on Twitter.

Another joked: “The Haunting of Peter Quint’s Scottish Accent.”

A third added: “Peter Quint’s accent is atrocious. I didn’t realise until later that it was supposed to be Scottish.”

Oliver Jackson-Cohen is the man behind the accent - and you’ll not be surprised to hear that he’s not from this neck of the woods, as the 33-year-old originally hails from London.

It is not the first time that the actor has been taken out of his accent comfort zone, as he starred as the American Luke Crain in the previous The Haunting of Hill House series.

While Scots have been quick to roast his attempt at a Scottish accent on the latest series, many have praised the English actor for his performance on the show.

One person wrote: “Can we just talk about how amazing Victoria Pedretti and Oliver Jackson-Cohen were in Bly Manor? Like not once did they remind me of Nell or Luke, they took on Dani and Peter so well and no one could have done it better.”

Another said: “Oliver Jackson-Cohen is full-on channeling a young Sean Connery in The Haunting of Bly Manor. It’s kind of remarkable.”

The Haunting of Bly Manor is available to watch on Netflix now.
