Netflix's Stranger Things smashes three 'astounding' records in just a fortnight

In just two weeks Stranger Things ' much-anticipated fourth season has managed to rack up over half a billion hours played around the world, breaking three big streaming records.

The latest season follows the show's growing cast of young actors as they delve ever deeper into the paranormal goings-on in the fictional rural town of Hawkins, Indiana.

Netflix's nostalgia-laden sci-fi series has long been one of the platform's most popular shows, but viewing figures released this week show that Stranger Things has only grown in popularity since it broke onto the scene in 2016 - getting more viewers in its first fortnight on the platform than previous seasons got in their first month.

Viewers collectively spent 621,800,000 watching the latest Stranger Things season, which will please Netflix executives who reportedly spent $30 million dollars on the production of each episode and called the record "astounding". It is the first TV series to enter their top three "most popular" list.

There's more trouble in Hawkins in season four of Stranger Things (Netflix)

Data released by Netflix also shows the global appeal of the series, with the latest season becoming the most viewed content in 91 countries around the world on release. Setting a new record.

Season four has also become the most-watched English-language TV series on Netflix in its first week, with 335 million hours viewed in just seven days. Setting a record that the streaming company described as "staggering".

The show, famous for its nostalgic love for the 80s, has also caused Kate Bush anthem, Running Up That Hill, to enter the Billboard Top 100 for the first time in the song's history.

Netflix also said this surge in viewers also spread to the show's previous seasons, saying: "Fans of the Hawkins crew also traveled back in time as Seasons 1 to 3 had 75.08M hours viewed, 58.27M hours viewed, and 47.42M hours viewed, respectively."

Fans have given this latest season an incredibly high score on review site Rotten Tomatoes, with a 91 per cent approval rating from both fans and industry critics alike.

Online fan 'Justin J' left a review, saying: "A nostalgic fun roller coaster ride with a bit of nightmare. This season to me is tv programming in its finest. Entertaining from start to finish. it will keep you guessing and wondering. A+A+A+ Love it."

Another online review, left by 'David T', said: "One of the best shows ever produced on television. Top Tier television. Acting, story, and cinematography are first rate. The ending of Episode 7 just blew me away. Wow..."
