Netflix's Ratched trailer leaves viewers terrified by nightmarish and sickening scenes

The first trailer for Netflix horror series Ratched has left viewers sickened by its evil scenes.

The new drama comes from Glee and American Horror Story creator Ryan Murphy and stars Golden Globe winner Sarah Paulson as one of cinema's most iconic characters.

Ratched is a spin-off and prequel to the classic novel and film One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, focusing on the evil and abusive Nurse Ratched.

The character was played by Louise Fletcher in the film and won an Oscar for her portrayal of the ruthless administrator of the mental institution.

The series will tell the origin story of Nurse Mildred Ratched as she comes fresh from the Second World War and begins her work as a nurse in the mental health system.

However, if she looked bad in the film, here she is downright murderous as she commits bloody acts to ensure her climb to the top.

The trailer shows her clashing with Nurse Betsy Bucket (Judy Davis) and Dr. Richard Hanover (Jon Jon Briones), whilst also meeting characters such as eccentric Lenore Osgood ( Sharon Stone ) and friendly Gwendolyn Briggs ( Cynthia Nixon ).

Yet, it is the tortuous and bloody content of the scenes in the mental institution - including nail-biting lobotomy scenes - that has gotten Netflix fans talking on social media.

One Netflix fan wrote on Twitter : "am I going to have nightmares? Yes. The Do I care? No."

Meanwhile, another frightened viewer tweeted: "Omg don’t do that I’m actually so afraid, I don’t need more of this s**t. Jzkakzkskskksjsjsjsbsja but i want the show right now ndkizuaudjkskdkz".
