Netflix's new horror show from the Haunting of Hill House creator gets superb reviews

Over the last ten years, Mike Flanagan has established himself as one of - if not the - finest director in the horror genre and a large reason for this was his work on the Netflix hit, The Haunting Of Hill House.

While the follow-up series The Haunting of Bly Manor didn't quite reach the level of scares as its predecessor, it still impressed plenty of viewers and Flanagan is back on Netflix with his latest series, Midnight Mass.

After terrifying us all with his haunted house tales, viewers are about to go on a journey to Crockett Island, an isolated island community that experiences miraculous events - and frightening omens – following the arrival of a charismatic, mysterious young priest.

In terms of the plot, Midnight Mass tells the tale of a small, isolated island community whose existing divisions are amplified by the return of a disgraced young man (Zach Gilford) and the arrival of a charismatic priest (Hamish Linklater).

When Father Paul’s appearance on Crockett Island coincides with unexplained and seemingly miraculous events, a renewed religious fervour takes hold of the community: but do these miracles come at a price?

Set to be released on Friday, the early reviews are absolutely glowing on Netflix's new horror series with the show registering 96% on Rotten Tomatoes and 76% on the more reliable Metacritic.

In terms of reviews, Midnight Mass's has been described as a slow boil that's a triumph of terror that will leave viewers shaking - and thinking - long after the credits roll.

Time Magazine said Midnight Mass is "is his best one (show) yet" while IGN echoed this sentiment in their review too when they said: "Mike Flanagan's Midnight Mass is his best work to date. It's filled with compelling characters and plenty of frights of both the supernatural and human varieties, but it's also a deeply personal story.

Meanwhile, the Radio Times noted that Midnight Mass is "genuinely thrillingly, unique and certain scenes and moments will live with you long after you've finished watching."

The master of horror Stephen King also got a preview and he's a big fan of Netflix's new horror show.

"Midnight Mass on Netflix: Mike Flanagan has created a dense, beautifully photographed terror tale that climbs to a high pitch of horror by the 7th and last episode," he said.

  • Midnight Mass is released on Netflix on September 24.
