When I’m really interested in a new movie or show, I try to avoid trailers because I like to be surprised (plus, they tend to give away too much nowadays). But I couldn’t resist watching the new two-minute Netflix trailer for “The Resurrected,” a Chinese-language thriller series centered around brutal revenge, which arrives on October 9.
I wrote about the first teaser last month, noting how it gives revenge a seriously unhinged makeover. Even then, I was intrigued by the premise alone: two desperate mothers resurrect a crime boss through a dangerous ritual to avenge their kidnapped daughters.
The new trailer dives deeper into what happened to their daughters and the ritual that brings the predator back for seven days — a window of time the grieving mothers intend to use to carry out their vengeance.
In the fictional city of Benkha, Chang Shih-kai (Fu Meng-po) built a reputation as a manipulator and predator, responsible for the abuse and murder of several young girls. His trial ended with a death sentence, but for the mothers of his victims, he had an ending far too merciful for the suffering he caused.
Haunted by their grief and unwilling to let go, Wang Hui-chun (Shu Qi) and Chao Ching (Sinje Lee) recall a forbidden ritual they once encountered, one that can bring Chang back to life for seven days.
The latest trailer takes us inside Paradise, which seems to be a decaying, abandoned compound that serves as a prison for trafficked youths, among them the daughters of the central mothers.
But bringing back such a figure of cruelty is never without consequences, and the new trailer hints at their downward spiral.
‘The Resurrected’ looks like the perfect watch for Halloween
The beginning of September marks the start of the Halloween season, and there’s no better timing for “The Resurrected” to premiere at this year’s Busan International Film Festival. Hopefully, by the end of the month, we’ll start seeing early reactions before the show lands on Netflix in October.
“The Resurrected” has been on my radar for some time after I spotted the title on Netflix’s homepage. The concept of resurrecting someone for revenge is intriguing (and certainly one I haven’t encountered before), so there’s a lot of potential in the idea.
Not to mention, it’s directed by Leste Chen and Hsu Chao-jen, a strong creative team known for works like “Eternal Summer” and “Living.” The series stars internationally renowned actresses Shu Qi and Sinje Lee, marking their debut in a Chinese-language Netflix production, with Golden Horse Award winner Alyssa Chia appearing in a notable guest role.
Anyone who isn’t a huge horror fan might still enjoy this darker thriller around Halloween. The ritual aspect sounds intense, and the idea of a goddess serving as the supernatural force behind the mothers’ resurrection is compelling stuff. Safe to say, it’s already on my must-binge list for October.
The synopsis reads: "Set in the fictional city of Benkha, The Resurrected centers on two mothers united by hatred, seeking revenge for their daughters caught in a fraud and kidnapping case. With help from a mysterious goddess, they revive the deceased ringleader of the fraud scheme to punish him.
"Yet, despite inflicting relentless pain, their fury remains unquenched. As dark secrets unravel, their alliance is tested, forcing them to confront the limits of justice and their own morality."
